Budapest, 20 March 2017 (MIA) - Parties should seek for a solution through responsible conduct, in compliance with the Constitution, without undermining the country's unitary character. New parliamentary elections are a possible solution, where citizens could have a say on the themes surfacing in the post-election period, says President Gjorge Ivanov in an interview with Hungarian daily "Magyar Hirlap" ahead of his visit to Budapest on Monday.
President Ivanov is set to meet with counterpart Janos Ader, Prime Minister Viktor Orban and Speaker Laszlo Kover.
"The leader of SDSM, the party with second-highest number of MP, informed me over securing of a parliamentary majority, including parties of ethnic Albanians. I asked him to clearly reject and condemn the platform of the parties of ethnic Albanians, reminding him that Macedonian citizens voted for reforms, not a post-election platform of a foreign country. Unfortunately, there was no such rejection. Therefore, I said that no mandate will be given to those who negotiate over platforms of other countries, thus blackmailing the Macedonian people and endangering the country's unitary character, its sovereignty and independence", says Ivanov when asked about a way out of the political crisis in Macedonia.
He says the requirements by parties of ethnic Albanians are in conflict with the Constitution and do not correspond with the real situation in the country.
"Some of these requirements in the platform depend on statistics and reality on the ground, but a census has not been carried out in Macedonia for 14 years. No one can ask for rights that depend on statistics without a fresh census", stresses Ivanov.
Taking into consideration the multiethnic structure of Balkan states and events in the recent past, the President says it is necessary that political leaders use caution in their rhetoric.
He also refers to Macedonia's role in the migrant crisis management.
"We are faced with a paradox, since Macedonia, which is not an EU member, safeguards Europe from an EU member that has not managed to control the refugee crisis, only redirecting refugees", says Ivanov. ik/10:31
