Skopje, 7 December 2017 (MIA) - The Macedonian society is faced with a tradition of corruption, which uprooting requires the realization that it is not normal to pay extra money for state services or to bypass the institutional labyrinths.
Civil society organizations (CSOs) must take part in the fight against corruption, urge for transparency and get involved in the decision-making process, as well as use their link with citizens, thus providing them with a broad perspective when addressing problems in the society.
On occasion of the International Anti-Corruption Day , the Platform of civil society organizations fighting corruption organized conference "Captured State - Political, Social and Economic Interests" in Skopje on Thursday, bringing together about 80 representatives of CSOs, the executive, legislative and judicial authorities, as well as donor community and media.
Minister of Interior Oliver Spasovski said in the opening remarks that the MoI leadership would not allow for another scandal of power abuse.
"We want to be subject to criticism so that we remain vigilant and for Macedonia to stay on the right track. Critical thought is the first step, constructive remarks and guidelines that have no hidden motives", said Spasovski.
He said the authorities have the political will to change old habits, but specific steps are required in this regard.
"Our goal is to listen to CSOs as partners in these changes. Citizens have the right to live in a free country, while institutions are obliged to provide this", added Spasovski.
Lukas Holub of the EU Delegation to Skopje said corruption represented discrimination, with clear and transparent procedures required to fight this phenomenon.
"People must expect and ask for more from the state. It is not good to pay extra money for services that the state is supposed to give free of charge", stressed Holub. ik/12:21
