Skopje Aqueduct to be restored

Skopje Aqueduct to be restored

Skopje, 25 February 2018 (MIA) - The Skopje Aqueduct will be restored to feature several accompanying recreational and cultural points. Restoration work will begin with conservation of the most at-risk parts of the Aqueduct and the whole process will take place in several stages.

Minister of Culture Robert Alagozovski said MKD 1,100,000 (approximately EUR 18,000) had been singled out this year for the preparation of a project on conservation and restoration of the Skopje Aqueduct 'after years of institutional neglect.'

"In this unique monument, we are prepared to invest more in order to save it from decay and to revive this wonderful part of the city," Alagjozovski told reporters on Sunday. He toured the site outside Skopje together with Prime Minister Zoran Zaev and Skopje Mayor Petre Silegov.

The City of Skopje, Silegov said, will build adequate infrastructure around the Roman-era aqueduct, as well as an outdoor stage with up to 1,000 seats.

Concrete actions will be taken to protect cultural heritage, according to PM Zaev.

"In the year dedicated to European cultural heritage, we have focused our efforts on preserving our cultural and historical treasure," he noted. ba/15:55
