Skopje, 8 March 2018 (MIA) - The Helsinki Committee of Human Rights of the Republic of Macedonia on the occasion of the International Women’s Day told Thursday that the situation of gender equality in the country remains only a declarative effort by the authorities.
Women in Macedonia still experience discrimination on grounds of sexual orientation and gender identity in all social processes, without having the protection of their rights. Among the most vulnerable groups are textile workers, women from rural areas, Roma women, women victims of violence and women with disabilities, Macedonian Helsinki Committee said in a press release.
The ratification of the Council of Europe Convention on preventing and combating violence against women and domestic violence, also known as the Istanbul Convention is the most important step that the government has taken to combat violence against women, however several cases of violence against women and sexual abuse of girl in the public Institution for care of children “25 May” in Skopje are examples that the system for care and protection is not fully operational, reads the press release.

Over three-quarters of domestic violence have not been reported in competent institutions.
