Women MPs' Club marks 15th anniversary

Women MPs

Skopje, 7 March 2018 (MIA) - The Macedonian Parliament will get a 'women's room' like the one in the Swedish Parliament.

Parliament Speaker Talat Xhaferi said a project was due to be launched to promote and preserve the contribution of female MPs and stakeholders in Parliament and its working bodies.

"It is designed as a modest, but significant contribution and recognition of the role of female politicians in the Parliament of Macedonia," he said speaking at an event marking the 15th anniversary of the Women MPs' Club,

In the past 15 years, the Women MPs' Club has put forward many bills on advancing gender equality and improving women's rights, on increasing the inclusion of women in decision-making processes and on enhancing democracy in every segment of the society in Macedonia.

The current composition in Parliament consists of 45 female MPs, i.e. 39%.

Gjulumser Kasapi, coordinator of the Women MPs' Club, said the Club in cooperation with the Committee for Equal Opportunities had initiated a joint declaration on increasing the number of women in the executive government and the number of female mayors.

The Women MPs' Club is an informal group that consists of all female lawmakers regardless of their partisan affiliation. In 2003, it was set up as part of the regional project 'Stability Pact Gender Task Force'. The Club is supported by NDI, UNDP, UN Women, the Macedonian Women's Lobby, the National Gender Equality Council, etc. ba/18:18
