Jose Emilio Pacheco, this year's SPE laureate

Skopje, 28 February 2013 (MIA) - Mexican poet Jose Emilio Pacheco is this year's Golden Wreath laureate of the 52. Struga Poetry Evenings (SPE).

"Presentation of this year's Golden Wreath award to Jose Emilio Pacheco once again confirms SPE's goal - maintaining spiritual global unity through diversity - as well as the fact that the language of poetry is universal, comprised of all spoken tongues worldwide", said Thursday festival management Board chairman, Slave Gjorgo Dimovski.

Culture Minister Elizabeta Kanceska-Milevska said Jose Emilio Pacheco is one of the most eminent poets of his generation, whose work singles out through the precision of his poetry language, his passion, his independence.

"I believe the author's presence at this year's SPE edition will attract many followers to visit the country and be part of the traditional poetry celebrations", added Kanceska-Milevska.

Pacheco says the Golden Wreath is the best recognition he could get for his 50-year work.

"Back in the 1960s, I read about the Struga Poetry Evenings as being one of the largest gatherings of this type in the world. I knew that the Golden Wreath is presented to great poets, whom I truly admire, such as Adunis, Auden, Brodsky, Guillevic, Heaney, Montale, Neruda, Transtromer. Therefore, I can say with sincerity that I have never thought myself as part of that company. I thank the Management Board for the award from the bottom of my soul, feeling it justifies, in a way, my existence in this world", says the Mexican poet in the message to SPE.

Jose Emilio Pacheco (b.1939) is a poet, essayist, novelist and short story writer. He is regarded as one of the major Mexican poets of the second half of the 20th century. The Berlin International Literature Festival has praised him as "one of the most significant contemporary Latin American poets". In 2009 he was awarded the Cervantes Prize for his literary oeuvre. He has taught at UNAM, as well as the University of Maryland, College Park, the University of Essex, and many others in the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom. ik/12:18
