City of Skopje issues recommendations on air pollution

City of Skopje issues recommendations on air pollution

Skopje, 23 November 2016 (MIA) – The citizens should use public transportation, reduce their outings to the minimum, small children, pregnant women, chronically ill people and the elderly should mainly stay indoors. They should refrain from opening windows or doors, it is recommended by the City of Skopje following worsened air quality registered for five consecutive days in the Macedonian capital.

The City of Skopje also recommends that vehicles should not be used unnecessarily and suggests more people share car journeys in a single vehicle.

The citizens are also urged to use dry and pure heating wood without residues of dirt and are advised against using undefined heating fuels, such as waste oil, lacquered and colored wood and furniture waste, plastic materials, rubber or any synthetic material. It is recommended that chimneys should be cleaned on regular basis and furnaces be used and maintained accordingly.

“The City of Skopje is continuing to conduct activities aimed at reducing air pollution. We call on the citizens to abide by the measures so as to improve the air quality, which is the ultimate goal we should all strive for,” it said in a statement.

The recommendations are in line with information provided by the Ministry of Environment and Physical Planning about the deteriorating air quality due to an increase in PM10 particles in five days in a row. ba/13:36
