Macedonia observes International Francophonie Day

Skopje, 20 March 2017 (MIA) - The Skopje-based French Embassy and French Institute presented Monday the activities for observance of March 20 - International Francophonie Day.

The observation program includes numerous events, such the French Cuisine Week, concerts, lectures, regional forum in French language...

The French language brings together the people across the globe, while the International Organization of La Francophonie is one large family of diverse practices, French Ambassador Christian Thimonie told a press conference.

"We wish to celebrate the Francophonie movement in Macedonia in all of its rich dimensions, especially via the bilingual classes in high schools, professional practice in companies of the Francophone University Agency, as well as via the culture - deeply enrooted in the Balkans,' Thimonie said.

Macedonia has been a member of the International Organization of La Francophonie since 2006, providing an active role in the promotion of the Francophonie in Southeast Europe.

The International Organisation of La Francophonie, formed in 1970, represents countries and regions where French is the first ("mother") or customary language, where a significant proportion of the population are francophones (French speakers) or where there is a notable affiliation with French culture.

Today's event was also attended by representatives of the International Organization of La Francophonie and the ambassadors of Albania, Austria, Bulgaria, Greece, Romania and Switzerland to Macedonia. lk/17:37
