Skopje, 14 November 2017 (MIA) - Seat Kocan, main defendant in the Trust case, pleaded not guilty to charges filed against him by the Special Public Prosecution (SPO).
SPO prosecutor Gavril Bubevski in his opening arguments said that the three defendants - namely Seat Kocan, Vasilije Avirovic and Safet Vatic - including the companies Transmet, Sileks Nemetali and Vato, under false pretenses of running successful businesses had mismanaged EUR 17 million of taxpayers' money. According to him, their motive was in an illegal manner, with false documents, to win a tender of the state power company ELEM.
Evidence presented by the SPO, said Bubevski, will bring to light that the defendants with a stack of false documents had undermined the principles of sound competition, breached the rules for public procurement that have been set in place in order to prevent from criminal setups being made to misuse taxpayers' money.
"Today, a criminal association is brought to justice whose sole unifying element is illegitimate profit," said Bubevski.
The SPO prosecutor demanded the Criminal Court find the defendants guilty of the crimes they were charged with.
The SPO, set up to probe high-level crime and corruption, opened the case based on three wiretapped conversations.
The trial resumes on Nov. 21. ba/14:00
