President Pahor: Slovenia - staunch supporter of Macedonia

Skopje, 14 November 2017 (MIA) - Slovenia has been monitoring and approves Macedonia's good-neighborly relations and regional cooperation as preconditions for the EU, NATO membership, and remains staunch supporter of its Euro-Atlantic integration processes, President Borut Pahor said Tuesday in Ljubjana at a meeting with Macedonia's Prime Minister Zoran Zaev.

Pahor expressed hope for Macedonia to be the next NATO member and soon reach an agreement with Brussels on opening the EU accession talks.

Following the local elections results, which confirmed the citizens' support of current policies, the government is now obliged to speed up and successfully complete the ongoing reforms, Zaev said.

The government, he said, wishes to present substantial regulations related to overall reforms to the MPs, expecting broad support from the parliament's political parties.

'We wish to strengthen the Parliament's role after the political crisis in the country and restore the public trust in state institutions,' he said, adding that efforts are also in progress for reaching political consensus on Macedonia's bid to join the EU and NATO.

Zaev extended congratulations to Pahor on his re-election for Slovenia's President. He also conveyed the congratulations on the occasion of Macedonia's President Gjorge Ivanov.

Today, Zaev also held talks with Slovenian Parliament Speaker Milan Brglez. lk/16:13
