Belgrade, 16 April 2018 (MIA) - I hope we will get a clear recommendation for the opening of negotiations to join the EU, Foreign Minister Nikola Dimitrov said in a speech at an event marking the 10th anniversary of the European Fund for the Balkans taking place Monday and Tuesday in Belgrade.
He said he looked forward to reading the report of the European Commission, due to be unveiled tomorrow.
"Freedom House in the latest Nations in Transit report noted that Macedonia is a country that had made the biggest democratic breakthrough in Europe. It was noted that the country, though small, had a myriad of opportunities, which has doubled my level of adrenaline and enthusiasm," said Dimitrov.
Integration into the EU, he added, should be perceived regionally and the countries have to be aware about their mutual ties.
"It's impossible for Macedonia to be a happy place, a successful and stable democracy if Serbia is none of those things. It's impossible to have a region in which everyone once in a while doubt the future and the functioning of BiH. We are all in this, the sooner we understand it, the sooner we will solve the issues and show our European friends that we are their partners," the Macedonian top diplomat said.
The countries in the region, oftentimes, wanted to be the victims and to blame others for their problems, according to Dimitrov.
"The neighbors are to blame, Brussels, no one wants us. It's all in our hands, no one said it is going to be easy to build a European democracy. The region has to catch the train en route to Euro-integration," FM Dimitrov concluded.
As part of the conference, Dimitrov held talks with Florian Bieber, Director of the Centre for Southeast European Studies in Austria, Kristof Bender, Head of the Vienna-based European Stability Initiative, and Hedvig Morvai, Executive Director of the European Fund for the Balkans, etc.
Talks mainly focused on the upcoming EC report on progress of the countries in the region and on future steps that need to be taken in the EU integration processes.
The main objective of the European Fund for the Balkans is to promote EU integration of the countries in the region and their transformation into prosperous and stable European democracies. ba/21:12
