Brussels, 13 June 2018 (MIA) – Macedonia’s President Gjorge Ivanov should act responsibly with regards to Skopje-Athens name agreement, EU Commissioner for European Neighbourhood Policy and Enlargement Negotiations Johannes Hahn said Wednesday in an interview with MIA.
‘It is not etiquette of the office of a president to refuse talking to the prime minister, foreign minister to get first-hand information. The prime and foreign ministers have respected constitutional settings and I can only urge the president to take the responsibility. It is not about agreeing on something but in democracy one can expect to listen to each other and to discus, and one should not forget the head of a state is in a way a role model for many people in a country. So if it is about a democratic maturity than the president, usually being directly elected, as it is the case in your country, has a specific standing position and therefore responsibility and he should be aware about this. Otherwise he is damaging the office,’ Hahn told MIA. lk/19:12
