Skopje, 7 December 2017 (MIA) - Macedonia meets the conditions to start of negotiations for EU membership. Hungary has always supported Macedonia to start accession negotiations, but it is a political decision, Hungarian Ambassador to Macedonia László István Dux said, giving the lecture on “The prospects of EU’s enlargement policy from a V4 perspective” held Thursday at the University American College in Skopje.
The EU accession process is long-term process. Croatia needed seven years to start negotiations. Macedonia has been working for eight years to meet the Copenhagen criteria, and even though it cannot start negotiations for political reasons, it is preparing for the process, Dux said.
If the country resolves the name dispute, the accession process should be a problem, he said.
Following the parliamentary elections on December 11, 2016, the Visegrad Group (V4) encourages the government to continue to implement reform priorities and political agreements of 2015, in order for the European Commission (EC) extend its recommendation to open accession negotiations. If that happens, the V4 will support the start of accession negotiations. The Visegrad Group supports the agreement on good neighbourly relations with Bulgaria and the hopes for progress in talks with Greece over the name issue, so that Macedonia can formally join NATO and the EU, Dux underlined.
He noted that the European Union wants to see more members from the Western Balkans join it by 2025 and that perspective is possible, but it is important that the EU itself is changing, there are hundreds of new rules and regulations that must be implemented, which did not exist a few years ago, which make the process of accession difficult.
He pointed out the reforms in the judiciary, freedom and security and the environment, as the most difficult negotiating chapters and if there are problems with them, it may also hamper other negotiating chapters. sk/12:54
