Berlin, 7 December 2017 (MIA) - The next NATO summit is scheduled for July 2018 but the list of guests is already a subject of attention as invitations for such high-level event are on their way already. There is no doubt that authorities in Skopje are hoping to get such invitation, the Deutsche Welle says.
It is not certain yet whether Greece will accept an admission of its northern neighbor under the reference 'FYROM' as the bilateral relations are relaxed after the change of power in Skopje.
The EU and US should do much more for the name row to be settled on the basis of the so-called 1995 Interim Treaty, Daniel Serwer, professor at the American John Hopkins University and expert for the Balkans, told DW. Under this treaty Macedonia should be allowed to join NATO under the provisional reference 'FYROM', something that was later on confirmed by the International Court of Justice.
James Mackey, Head of NATO Euro-Atlantic and Global Partnership Office, says 'it would be rather simple to present the difference over the name as the only obstacle to the NATO accession.'
'We have seen setbacks related to matters of democracy, the rule of law, operation mode of security, intelligence services.' Mackey says, notifying that new Macedonian Prime Minister Zoran Zaev has pledged to implement reforms in these spheres.
'We shall carefully monitor this process,' Mackey says. lk/16:31
