Skopje, 23 August 2017 (MIA) - Transportation Minister Goran Sugareski said that the european Union has provided 35,4 million EUR to build the Gradsko-Drenovo express way, and that construction is expected to begin by the end of the year. The Ministry, Sugareski said, is in the final stages of selecting the construction company for this project which should help connect Prilep and Bitola to the Alexander the Great highway - Macedonia's main north - south corridor.
"EU supports the efforts of the new Government and decided to allow a 35,4 million EUR grant to fund this express way. This brings another capital investment realized through the Transportation and Infrastructure Ministry and the new Government", said Sugareski.
Additional funds from the Macedonian budget are provided for the 15 kilometer stretch. Sugareski expects that the connection between Gradsko and Prilep will be completely finished by the end of 2019 or early 2020. The middle portion of this express way is being built, but work is delayed after the discovery of archaeological finds on the main route. Regarding the final portion of the road toward Prilep, the Sugareski said that the Government is in talks with the European Union, to provide additional funding.
Sugareski also said that they are working on legal requirements to relocate a power line pylon that has prevented the opening of the Demir Kapija - Smokvica highway. Work also continues on the Kicevo - Ohrid highway, which Sugareski said is being slowed down until assessments are made by the newly appointed Government on the additional costs of this Chinese supported project. Regarding the other major Chinese supported project, the Skopje - Stip highway, Sugareski said that talks are on-going to extend the contract so that work can continue with full intensity.cc/15:09
