PM Zaev: I'll appear as witness in 'Monster' trial if asked

PM Zaev: I

Skopje, 21 April 2018 (MIA) - Prime Minister Zoran Zaev said Saturday that he would appear as a witness in the 'Monster' trial if the court asks him to. He has already submitted, he said, all documents he had on the case.

"If the court asks me to be a witness and tell them everything I know, I will do it as it is my civic duty. All materials I had, including those about the Monster case, I already gave the court," Zaev said in response to questions during a press conference held today to promote the government's planned investments in communal infrastructure.

He added that what remains is for the jurisdiction to make a decision.

Regarding the allegations about covertly-recorded conversations between the defendant Fejzi Aziri and former Gostivar mayor Nevzat Bejta, the PM said that the 'bombs' included a conversation in which Aziri was asking for subsidies for agriculture. He also showed the conversation, he said, to the parents of the murdered young men near Smilkovci Lake.

Four young men, all aged between 18 and 20, and one 45-year old man were found dead on April 12, 2012, near Smilkovci Lake in the vicinity of Skopje. They appeared to have been killed.

Six men were charged with terrorism and jailed for life over the killings, but the Supreme Court dismissed the verdicts in November 2017 and returned the case for a retrial. mr/14:58
