FM Dimitrov: Name deal to be signed in next few days

Skopje, 14 June 2018 (MIA) – A ceremony for signing Skopje-Athens name deal will take place in the next few days, Macedonia’s Foreign Minister Nikola Dimitrov said Thursday in an interview with the Deutsche Welle.

The government in Skopje should adopt the draft agreement, and we should also see what will happen in Athens, considering the political turbulences in the country, Dimitrov says commenting a possibility for the deal to be signed this weekend in Greek part of Prespa region.

He also notifies that the signing ceremony is to be attended by high international officials, such as EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini and UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres.

‘All of us wish for Macedonia to move forward, our identity to be protected, affirmed, promoted. I believe it will be easier to iron the differences if we unite upon this principle. Maybe over the years Macedonia has had an opportunity for a better deal. But we have had no courage to get rid of this anchor that has been pulling us down. And now there is a government to think where Macedonia will be in 10, 20 years. Our task as politicians, and politics is art of the possible, is to see a problem, find a solution and offer it to citizens,’   Dimitrov says in regard to yesterday’s brief meeting with President Gjorge Ivanov on the name agreement.

None of Macedonia’s officials, institutions can replace the public vote on the matter, as citizens are the ones to decide on their future, Dimitrov says.

‘It is time for leadership. We must enable citizens to voice their opinion about the opportunity we have created. It is not easy for anybody. And I believe courage means an ability to face, deal with a problem. If there are other alternative roads to the future it would be nice to hear them as well,’ Dimitrov says. lk/17:53
