FinMin Tevdovski at Sofia conference "Equality Matters"

Sofia, 16 May 2018 (MIA) - Finance Minister Dragan Tevdovski addressed Wednesday conference "Equality Matters", organized by the Friedrich Ebert Foundation ahead of the EU-Western Balkans Summit in Sofia.

The Finance Ministry said the main topic of the event was inequality in Southeast Europe and an analysis providing empirical data on the state of inequality of income in regional countries, also providing specific proposals for improvement of the situation, the Finance Ministry said in a press release.

Emphasis is put on the labor market and decent work, reforms in the system of taxes and social transfers, as well as the need for quality public education.

Minister Tevdovski referred to the importance of creating policies for a fair society in regional countries, highlighting the measure of raising the minimum salary in Macedonia.

"The opponents of this idea considered this measure would result in massive layoffs. And the result was zero layoffs. The lowest salaries increased, primarily for women working in the textile industry. Furthermore, the salary rise made companies think about the rise of productivity and modernization of processes," Tevdovski told the conference. ik/16:47
