Skopje, 11 June 2018 (MIA) – Macedonia has started working on the new Economic Reforms Program for 2019-2021, which aims to accelerate the country's progress towards the EU. This is the second such program the government has introduced. Some reforms have been implemented in part, and the EU has offered its support to carry out the rest. Those were some of the main points of Monday's 'Economic Reforms Program: the key to fundamentally approach and manage finances during the process of the European Semester' held in Skopje.
"This document," Finance Minister Dragan Tevdovski said, "is part of the EU pre-accession process. It aims to improve the performances of our economy and prepare us for the European market."
"This is the first time," Tevdovski pointed out, "that we have a clear and credible strategy for public finance reforms, which we have developed together with the EU, and which we will implement in the next three years."
Samuel Zbogar, EU Special Representative in Macedonia, said the program would accelerate Macedonia's EU accession.
"The program's goal," Zbogar said, "is to develop the country's economy and free market through transparent budgeting and transparent policies serving the citizens. It supports you on your chosen path and will accelerate your progress towards the EU."
Marzena Kisielewska, Head of the OECD Global Relations South East Europe Division, praised Macedonia's progress, pointing out examples of reducing unemployment, although, she noted, the national rate was still three times higher than the European average. mr/13:23
