MANU marks 51st anniversary

MANU marks 51st anniversary

Skopje, 9 October 2018 (MIA) - The 2018 programme of the Macedonian Academy of Sciences and Arts (MANU) is being realized with a satisfactory tempo without any hurdles, MANU President Taki Fiti said in a speech Tuesday on the occasion of the institution's 51st anniversary.

Speaking about MANU's activities in the past nine months, Fiti said that the number of projects and papers was on the rise, especially those in the sphere of law and economics, and the arts.

"I'm also satisfied with international cooperation. It is being further developed, which is very important for a small country and a small academy, because it contributes to the reputation of the Academy, of Macedonian sciences and arts," he said at the ceremony.

This year, MANU hosted two Nobel Prize laureates, namely Ouided Bouchamaoui, co-laureate of the 2015 Nobel Peace Prize, and Ferid Murad, co-winner of the 1998 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, Fiti noted.

The MANU President also said that two local scientific conferences left a mark, i.e. the conferences about the agreements with Bulgaria and Greece.

To mark its anniversary, MANU presented its highest international recognition - the Blaze Koneski Award, named after the first president of the Academy.

This year's laureates include Jolanta Sujecka from Poland and Yumi Nakajima from Japan, awarded for their contribution to affirming Macedonian language in their countries.

On 9 October 1967, MANU held its constitutive assembly. The next day, the Academy had its formal inauguration. ba/17:22
