Macedonia makes progress, EU's Juncker tells DW

Macedonia makes progress, EU

Berlin, 28 February 2018 (MIA) - Macedonia has been making significant progress towards Europe, European Commission President Jean Claude Juncker says in an interview with the Deutsche Welle.

'I've visited Macedonia, fYRoM as it is named under the diplomatic jargon. I've concluded that Macedonians, the government are making a different, rather substantial progress towards Europe. But at all points of my journey I've not promised anybody (no country) an accession talks' date, even to those that have already commenced the negotiations for the EU membership. What's important is the substance not the calendar,' Juncker says as he wrapped up his Western Balkan tour.

The European Commission will present its recommendations to that effect in April, Juncker says, notifying that meeting of the EU membership criteria is a must, including the need of all Western Balkan countries to resolve their border disputes.

'We cannot import border disputes in Europe and the EU. We wish to bring stability to the region, having no desire for instability in return,' Juncker says.

Tomorrow in Sofia, Juncker, along with Boyko Borisov, the Prime Minister of current EU Presidency holder - Bulgaria, will meet the Heads of Government of Western Balkans. Macedonia's Prime Minister Zoran Zaev is also set to attend the gathering.

The meeting will tackle the possibilities to speed up the EU integration processes of the Western Balkans countries and advance their inter-connectivity, the press release reads. lk/16:27
